Engaging Heritage Through Storytelling, Place & Participation
Séverine Peyrichou has worked across a range of heritage and tourism projects, from UNESCO World Heritage Sites to film tourism initiatives. Below are highlights of her recent and ongoing work in interpretation, community engagement, and cultural tourism.
Midhope Castle
At Midhope Castle—known worldwide as an Outlander filming location—Séverine created new visitor materials designed to enrich the on-site experience:
- Designed a visitor leaflet including a location map and QR trail
- Developed multilingual versions in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish,Italian and English to support international accessibility
- Integrated the real historical narrative of Midhope Castle, expanding interpretation beyond its screen identity
She is currently working closely with the Keeper of Midhope Castle to develop a full interpretation plan, with the goal of establishing a sustainable visitor attraction that respects the site’s true heritage and story.
Antonine Wall (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Séverine joined the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project at its inception in early 2019, supporting a four-year effort to reconnect communities with this important Roman monument.
Project Highlights:
- Worked across interpretation, engagement, and media development
- Led relationships with stakeholders, from local communities to international partners
- Helped deliver key outputs:
- Five Roman-themed play parks
- Two large Roman head sculptures
- Five replica Roman distance slabs
- New film: The Antonine Wall: A 37-Mile Landmark
- Virtual tour with 360° views
- Educational comics co-created with local schools
- Anthology of short stories inspired by the Wall
- A series of community-led initiatives
The project received multiple awards, including:
- National Thistle Award for Thriving Communities (2023)
- Association for Heritage Interpretation – Outdoor Attraction Award (2021)
UNESCO UK “Local to Global” Project
In 2022, the Antonine Wall was selected as one of three pilot sites for UNESCO UK’s Local to Global capacity-building initiative.
Séverine contributed to:
- Development of the Antonine Wall Audience Development Plan
- Fundraising strategy
- Website and social media audits
Community Map Project
Séverine led the West Dunbartonshire Community Map initiative in partnership with artist Neil Thomson, bringing together local residents aged 60+ through workshops, guided walks, and creative storytelling.
2024–2025: End-to-End Route Audit
Séverine conducted a comprehensive interpretation audit across the entire Wall, leading to the creation of the first fully mapped digital end-to-end route of the Antonine Wall.
Social Media & Digital Engagement
Since 2019, Séverine has managed the Antonine Wall’s social media channels, including:
- Designing annual social media plans
- Creating tailored, multilingual content
- Growing a diverse online audience
Inverness Outlander
Since 2017, Séverine has supported the Inverness Outlander fan-led initiative, which highlights real-life book locations in and around the city.
Her contributions include:
- Translation and narration of the Geotourist audio guide in French and German
- Participation in public outreach events at:
- The Highland Life Museum
- Duncarron Fort
- Inverness Highland Games
Mary’s Meanders
Séverine has been a key member of the Mary’s Meanders team since 2017, leading Outlander location tours in English, French, and German.
To expand access for international visitors, she also:
- Created multilingual audioguides for self-guided use
- Developed storytelling experiences tailored to diverse audiences
